Invitations
 

  Welcome to the 16th International Symposium on Performance Improvement of Concrete for Long Life Span Structures (PICLS). We are pleased to invite you to PICLS 2023. PICLS is an international symposium that has been hosted by Korea, China, and Japan every year since 2007, and it is an event that fosters strong friendships between these three countries in the research area of concrete.
 

  I believe that the longevity of building construction is key to contributing to carbon neutrality and reducing CO2 emissions. It can decrease social and environmental costs by minimizing the waste of resources and the disposal of potential waste. This is especially important for concrete materials, which have been most widely used in construction. Therefore, improving the durability of concrete is critical for the longevity of buildings. However, these issues are often challenging due to the complexity of the concrete material itself and the unpredictable variation in practice. Hence, this research area must be studied as a common goal in a global society.
 

  PICLS aims to strengthen the competitiveness of concrete-related industries in each country by holding an international symposium among Korea, China, and Japan, where they can share their different research experiences on the same topic. With this regard, I believe PICLS can expand our knowledge.
 

  In this 16th PICLS, it is co-hosted by the Institute of Transportation and Architecture and the Department of Architectural Engineering at Korea National University of Transportation, engaging in a program including two keynote speakers and 39 technical presentations on various topics in the field of building materials, construction, and structure.
 

  We are very pleased to host this symposium, especially as it is an opportunity to re-engage the atmosphere that has been somewhat depressed due to COVID-19, and expected to have the opportunity to re-build friendships through pleasant meetings and academic exchanges as we experienced in the past.
